Choosing a transitional rug
Transitional rugs sit between traditional and modern. They take classic patterns like medallions, borders and Oriental motifs, and soften them with faded colour, distressed finishes or a simpler layout. The result suits most homes, and it's the easiest style to live with if you can't decide.
What's in this collection
Most of the range is from Rug Culture, including the Evoke, Mirage, Museum, Century, Legacy and Babylon designs. There are also designer pieces from Asiatic, Wedgwood, Florence Broadhurst and Ted Baker. Most are machine-made polypropylene or polyester with a short pile, which keeps prices down and makes them easy to spot clean.
Why transitional works
- It hides wear. Faded, mottled colour disguises everyday marks and traffic patterns
- It bridges styles. It suits a modern sofa and an antique sideboard in the same room
- It comes in sets. Many designs come as rectangles, runners (300x80, 400x80 and 500x80cm) and rounds (150 to 240cm), so the hall, lounge and dining room can match
Where it suits
Busy living and dining rooms, hallways, kids' rooms and rentals, anywhere you want pattern without worrying about every spill. The synthetic designs spot clean with mild soap and warm water. See care for synthetics.
Price and size
Everyday transitional rugs start well under $100 for smaller sizes. Most rectangles come in 230x160, 290x200, 330x240 and 400x300cm. Hand-tufted designer pieces cost more. Use the size guide to choose, and add a rug pad to stop it slipping on hard floors.
