Choosing a bedroom rug
A bedroom rug is about the first step of the day: something soft and warm instead of a cold floor. It also frames the bed and quietens a room with hard floors.
Sizing a rug under the bed
Aim for the rug to extend 45 to 60cm beyond the sides and foot of the bed, so you step onto it when you get up. Most people place it under the lower two-thirds of the bed, leaving the bedside tables on the floor.
- Queen bed: 280x200cm
- King bed: 330x240cm
- Single or king single: around 230x160cm
Short of floor space? A pair of runners either side of the bed gives the same soft landing. The size guide has more layouts.
Softness underfoot
Bedrooms are the one room where delicate fibres make sense, because traffic is light and shoes are usually off:
- Wool: warm and soft, with a medium pile in most of our designer ranges
- Shag: the cosiest option. See our shag rugs
- Viscose: silky and luxurious. Blot dry only, so keep drinks on the bedside table
- Polypropylene and polyester: easy care and good value for kids' and guest rooms
Colour and pattern
Soft neutrals and tonal textures keep a bedroom calm. Florals and botanicals from Wedgwood, Morris & Co and Sanderson add character without feeling busy. If your bedding changes often, a neutral rug gives you the most freedom.
Care
Vacuum once or twice a week without the beater bar, and rotate the rug every six months so the part beside the bed doesn't wear first. See our rug care guide.
A rug pad stops the rug shifting when the bed is made or moved, and adds an extra layer of cushioning.
