Choosing a traditional rug
Our traditional collection is built around Britain's heritage design houses: Morris & Co, Wedgwood and Sanderson. Expect rich florals, trailing vines, birds and fruit, often with a border, drawn from wallpaper and textile archives that go back more than a century. Most are hand-tufted wool with a medium pile.
Is this the look you're after?
These are English-style traditional rugs, mostly floral and botanical. If you're after a Persian or Oriental-style medallion design, look at our transitional rugs. They include classic medallion and border patterns with a softer, faded finish, many at everyday prices.
Where traditional rugs work
- Formal living rooms and studies: a heritage pattern gives the room depth and warmth
- Period homes: a natural partner for federation, Victorian and Californian bungalow interiors
- Modern rooms: a single traditional rug under clean-lined furniture stops a room feeling cold
Colour and pattern
Pick out one or two colours from the rug for cushions, curtains or a throw. A busy floral sits best with plain upholstery. Darker grounds like navy and charcoal hide everyday wear well.
Materials, sizes and price
These are designer wool rugs. Prices start from around $500, and most begin above $1,000. The most common sizes are 200x140, 240x170, 280x200 and 350x250cm, and a few Wedgwood designs come as rounds. New hand-tufted wool rugs shed loose fibres for the first few weeks, which is normal. Vacuum without the beater bar and spot clean with mild soap. See wool care.
Use the size guide to choose, and add a rug pad to protect the backing and your floor.
