What You'll Need

Before you get started, you'll need the following items:

  • Ice cubes (enough to cover the affected area)
  • A spoon or cupholder
  • A vacuum cleaner with the hose attachment
  • A hairdryer (optional)

Step One: Apply Ice Cubes to the Dent

Apply a generous amount of ice cubes to the dent and let them sit for 30 minutes to an hour. This will cause the fibers of the rug to contract, which will help lift the dent out. If the dent is particularly stubborn, you may need to apply ice for longer periods of time or repeat this step multiple times.
Note: You can also place a bag of frozen peas or carrots on the dent if you don't have any ice cubes on hand. Just make sure that the bag is wrapped in a towel so that it doesn't damage your rug.

Step Two: Lift Dent With Spoon

Once the fibers have contracted, use a spoon or cupholder to lift up the edge of the dent and vacuum underneath. The suction from the vacuum will help remove any dirt or debris that may be causing the dent. You may need to repeat this step multiple times until the dent is completely removed.

Step Three: Fluff Rug With Hairdryer (Optional)

If your rug looks a little flat after removing the dent, you can use a hairdryer on low heat to fluff up the fibers. Just hold the hairdryer about six inches away from the surface of the rug and move it back and forth until you're happy with the results.
